“ A Moral Question ”
Have you heard that young lady died because of the citizen of world’s richest country ?
She was American named Nikki White, contracted a serious disease called lupus when she graduated from college. In fact, modern medicine knew how to cure the lupus. She was middle class so she didn’t receive the social medical insurance under government. And she spent the last months of her pleading for help. Unfortunetly she died at thirty two years old. Ms. White’s death could be explained by two American values.
First, equality means that all American people have equal opportunities. Equality pursues also a variety of sectors like a quality of race, gender, job, education etc. In a positive way, equality helps a lot of immigrants and the poor, the uneducated to achieve American dream -entering to middle class from lower class- through a equal opportunity. Above all, equality promotes human right like gender opportunity. However, in this case equality was not applicable because America health care system do not cover treatment bill on a lot of American patients. Tens of millions of American people have too much money to qualify for health care under welfare, however too little money to pay for the medicines and doctors.
Another American value is materialism. This means the rewards of hard work, to consider money more than people or values. Again, this value has two sides. First of all materialism motives people work hard and helps make a stable finance which can purchase a big house, luxury funitures. On the other hand, materialism may mislead to ignore the poor. Therefore materialism can result in the goal of the money during people’s all life. Furthermore, materialism makes the staffs or organizations of medical fields to consider money more important than people’s health or life. Why did she die of lupus? The reason why she did not have a medical insurance which is cover her treatment on disease. More simply, Ms Nikki lived in America and not having a proper treatment on lupus so she died.
In fact, I had an auto accident owing to other driver’s mistake and went to emergency by ambulance. I saw a doctor afterward was pictured X-ray of my neck and CT of my shoulder. A few weeks later I received bill from hospital, I surprised at a mount of over 4,000 dollars. If I experienced a same case in my country, Korea, I would paid under 500 dollars. In my opinion, a perfect human society can not exist in the world today, it will be idealism of philosopher like Platon. But, equality in America become gradually not guarantee the equal opportuniy , that is very sad phenomenon. I hope that all American people have equal opportunities. In addition, we should consider more precious than money. Ms Nikki was a victim of materialism.
I strongly believe that equality should persist forever and money in materialism should not be consider more important than value of human. And I insist believe that the most important thing in our life is to respect human dignity each other. “If Nikki White had been a citizen of any other rich country like Germany, France, she would be alive today”

“ Learning Modalities ”
Many freshmen are unfamiliar with the types of learning in their college. There are three modalities of learning offered on campus. Three learning types are face to face, online, hybrid. What do you think is the most efficient study method? The most popular class which is preferred to college and students is probably face to face learning.
First, face to face class means students which go to college. This has some advantages. Its primary advantage is the active communication and feedback with professors. If you have any questions during a class, you can ask the professor anytime. In addition, you can also discuss your subject and assignment with your classmates. Despite the merits of face to face, people think it is inconvenient for students to always be required to attend the class. Moreover you have to pay attention to the class during lecture all the time and concentrate on the speaking instructor.
Next, online class have also both advantages and disadvantages. Students who participate in online learning feel that it is more convenient than face to face class. This learning has no limit of time and space. For example, students can study anytime and anywhere – learning by computer at 5:00am and studying by lecture uploaded to the web at a park, a café and even car. However, in an online class it is not easy to communicate, feedback with professor and students each other. Furthermore, the learning is less motivated than face to face because students do not go to the classroom, so students are likely to passive to participate in the class. Therefore, students who choose online class should control well themselves, in addition, they must manage courses which is required to graduate from college. If you do not have strong self-control, you may fail your credits and whoever learn by online should have a strong of willpower.
Finally, another learnig style is hybrid class. The learing can complement the disadvantages of the face to face and online class. If you want to communicate much more with professors and students, you can choose face to face class. In contrast, if you like to study without limit of time and space, you had better study by online class.
In fact, I studied in both face to face university and another online institution. After I graduated from high school, I was taught natural science by face to face class for four years. I experienced an academic lectures and met an intelligent professors who called a master in the fields. Face to face lecture was gave me not only an learning of knowledge but also a wideness of thought. At that time I was twenty yeats old, I didn’t feel uncomfortable for go to class, the reason why most students thought attendance is responsibility. Ten years later I wanted to learn the liberal arts, entered National Open University studying by online. Frankly speaking, I was very hard owing to study for myself at home without help an instructor. However I studied hard my major for two years, I got a bachelor of literature.
In conclusion, learning styles are classified three modalities, face to face, online and hybrid. I strongly recommend that you study as hybrid class. The subjects what you need to communicate so much should be choose by face to face. On the other hand, if you consider to study any course at home without disturbance, you can choose online class. I think that hybid learning is to mediate, cover the disadvantages of face to face and online learning.

“Volunteerism”
How to help others help you? Voluteerism has a positive effect on our community, and it is also beneficial for us. There are several benefits and motivations of volunteering. I am going to state why people volunteer and what are the benefits.
First of all, people want to volunteer because they feel happy to help others such as the poor, the elderly and minorities. For example, whether you serve meals for the homeless or deliver some food for single older people, when people help, others they feel happy. In addition, people who also are helped feel good because they are getting help. Giving back to your community is really valuable in itself.
Secondly, volunteers can gain valuable life experience and skills. For example, some students spent their summer vacation volunteering at a local library like Queens library. This library is in an area with many chinese people. Through the volunteering, the students can practice their second language skills. Moreover, volunteers meet new people came from many countries, and they can have a opportunity to learn another country’s culture. The volunteering experience should help students who attend as extra-curriculum and improve their resume. Above all, whoever participates this volunteering usually meet to new people, and that will be more important, affluent background as a social relation and human network in their future.
In fact, I really want to volunteer in my community like Queensborough or Manhattan, because I barely know my town and neighborhood. I have been just a half-year-Newyork resident, so I want to know to my community and its issues. However, the fact that I do not speak English well is one big problem I have and an obstacle to participate on my community. Fortunately, I found and applied to several organization which needed volunteers in QCC Voluteer Fair a couple weeks ago. After I registered to volunteer a few days later, I received email for volunteering from AHRC New York City. I also contacted that volunteering organization including Holocaust Resource Center of QCC, Guide Dog Foundation and Queens Library, addtionly I searched website for volunteerism. The opportunity is sure to very precious to me because volunteering is to participate, and contribute as America’s community member. In my opinion, our neighbors and citizens realize volunteerism has a number of benefits for us.
In conclusion, volunteerism is a win-win situation. I think both the people we are helping and we all feel good and happy. Volunteering causes happiness for all society member.

“ Miss Evers’ Boys ” Movie Review
Have you heard of the Tuskegee study? It was that a secret human experiment of Black people was conducted by America government. First of all, it is considered to signicant for people to ignore human right. Because researchers didn’t receive a permission, the informed consent, from patients was called human subjects. The film, ‘Miss Evers Boys” is the nonfictional story about infamous human experimentation which is Tuskegee study of untreated African American men with syphilis. From 1932 through 1972, the U.S Public Health Service studied 600 poor Blacks in Macon County, Alabama. According to the movie, doctors treated the men with placebos, and hid the true nature of their research. The story was told from the viewpoint of Eunice Evers, a local nurse who knew of the study’s true nature. The title of movie came from the fact that a performing dancer and three singers named their group in her honor.
First of all, I will explain to the case quoted from “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” In 1970’, most doctors and researchers has been unwilling to accept human rights such as informed consent. According to the reading, in 1976, John Moore had hairy-cell leukemia, a rare cancer at thirty one, and David Glode, a prominent cancer researcher, removed his spleen. Dr. Glode took his bone marrow, blood, and semen every few months. After that, Glode got a patent on Moore’s cell, and valuable proteins those cells produced. Consequently, he was given stocks and financing worth more than $3.5million by a biotech company. So, in 1984, Moore sued Glode and UCLA for deceiving him and using his body in research without consent. With that, Moore became the first person to legally stake a claim to his own tissue and sue for profits and damages. Nearly seven years after Moore originally filed suit, the Supreme Court of California ruled against him. The judge said that when tissues are removed from person’s body, and the person leave in a hospital, he/she has them as garbage. The judgement meant that Moore’s tissues that had been collected by Dr. Golde were not his own.
In my opinion, the judgement concerned Moore is a wrong interpretation on dignity of humanbeing because the decision of the court changed twice. I think that when people judge people it is possible to error. I connected Miss Evers’s Boys and Moore’s case because both cases were researcher without the patients’ permission. In the movie, I was impressed by Evers who roles local nurse because she was a warmed-hearted, tempered character and devoted to care for the poor Black men. On the other hand, the researchers who participated in the experiments such as Dr. Brodus and Dr. Douglas committed unconscientious, illegal, and corrupted, ugly medical history. I think they are not different from the Nazis who conducted the Holocaust which killed millions of Jewish people. After several decades, the U.S. government apologized for their crime, and the president Clinton said that my government is shameful; therefore, I am sorry. The film described an era when minorities like the poor and black peope ignored their dignity and human right by the mainstream people.
In conclusion, history progresses and develops by struggle of humankind. I also felt that the film says basic human right to be respectful regardless of race, gender, age, color.

“ The Right to Health Care ”
Should all Americans have the right to health care? 4.7million Americans(15.4% US population) do not have health insurance. On contrast, they live in the richest nation on earth. The United States and Mexico are the only countries of the 34members of the OECD(the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) that do not have universal health care. No one in the most richest country,America, in the world should go without health care. Health insurance should be an essential government service.
First, the founding documents of the United States provide support for a right to health care. The Declaration of Independence states that all men have “unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. That necessarily entails having the health care needed to preserve life and pursue happiness. The purpose of the US Constitution is to “promote the general welfare” of the people.
Second, providing all citizens the right to health care is good for economic productivity. When people have access to health care, they live healthier lives and miss work less, allowing them to contribute more to the economy. In 2012 study by researchers at the University of Colorado and Pensylvania showed that workers with health insurance miss an average 4.7 fewer work days than employees without health insurance.
Third, a right to health care could stop medical bankruptcies. About 62% of all US bankruptcies were filled by people who already had medical insurance. In 2010, there were 30million Americans who were contanted by a collection agency about a medical bill. If all Americans were provided health care under a single-payer system, medical bankruptcy would no longer exist. Because the government, not private citizens, would pay all medical bills.
Any opponents argue that a right health care amounts to socialism and it should be an individual’s responsibility, not the government’s role. However, many European countries with a universal right to health care have a lower Gross Domestic Product(GDP) per capita the United States, yet they provide a right to health care for all their citizens.
In my opinion, providing all Americans the right to health care is reasonable to the citizen because US government is the richest nation on earth and the government founded on the Constitution which contain “the general welfare” is responsible for the health care of their people. No more must happens medical bankruptcies, that is, which result in disappearance middle classes supporting American society.
In conclusion, health care should be an essential welfare for citizens and the nation must be support the security of their people from disease and risk.

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
Have you heard of “informed consent” ? A famous hospital, Jhons Hopkins, treated a cancer patient, and the doctors had researched on the collected tissue of the patient. However, the real purpose of the research was not given to the patient. Was she just a subject for the study doctors want to solve? The patient, Henrietta Lacks, was described in the book “The Immortal Life of Henriatta Lacks” written by Rebecca Skloot in 2010. According to the author, the book took more than ten years to research and write. Henrietta Lacks was an African American woman who had five children and was diagnosed with cervical cancer at thirty-one years old from Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1951. Despite being treated for cancer, she died of cervical cancer eight months later. The most significant fact is that her cells were used in the medical field without agreement of the family for nearly sixty years, and that resulted in developing a remarkable medicine like polio vaccine, chemotherapy, cloning, gene mapping, in vitro fertilization. However, HeLa cells, that is, cells collected from Henrietta Lacks, has been controversial because of lacking of patient’s permission named informed consent.
First of all, I do not believe that TeLinde, and Gey of Hopkins had the right to obtain a sample from her cervix to use in their research. Because they studied her tumor cell and normal cell without her agreement, that is, informed consent, and their research was immoral and illegal. In fact, Henrietta stopped her study in sixth grade and did not learn about science. Therefore, she did not understand what doctors speak the words because that was complicated medical vocabulary such as cervix or biopsy. Doctors only asked that Henrieeta should sign an “operation permit”.
Second, they did not give to some information to Henrietta for informed consent. Because informed consent means that doctors must inform patients the purpose and information which is merits, side effects and risks happening while operation was processed by physicians. However, they did not explain the information such as the purpose of the research for tissues collected from Henrietta. That means they did not give some information because Henrietta did not understand some information.
Third, there is an argumentative issue. I think that Henrietta would had given certain consent to have a tissue sample used in medical research if she had been given all the information. Because Hopkins should explain that she could take benefits and money, and she would had been escape from poor situation.
Fourth, I do not thoroughly read consent form before signing them. However, I usually ask a question about the form which is meaning of primary purpose. For example, I had an auto accident two months ago, and I went to an emergency room by EMT(Emergency Medical Technician). At the emergency room, nurse asked me to sign a consent form, however, I did not understand the title of the consent form which was four or five page’s documents. At that time, I questioned to nurse for the meaning of the title, Default. Once I understood the words, and I signed to the form.
There were some other examples of research smillar to Henrietta's case in America. The issue was informed consent, and that was related to human rights which are guaranteed in The Constitution. The notorious case was the Tuskegee syphilis study which experimented on Black Americans conducted by the U.S.government. The researchers experimented on Black men with syphilis without proper treatment which penicillin was recommended to cure syphilis by the government. The doctors only gave placebo which is ineffective medicine, unrelated to the disease. As a result, Black patients died with horrible pain. After several decades, the Investigation Committee of the Tuskegee study concluded that the study was illegal, immoral research, and President Clinton apologized for the involuntary human experimentation.
In my experience, whenever I see a doctor for the first time, all hospitals are always required to fill cosent form out and sign. In fact, the consent form contains very long sentences and several documents. They are responsible for explaining to the patients for the form as well as signing the form. Anyway, I think that the most important thing is an agreement, that is, patient’s permission. Lacks family did not know about HeLa cells for twenty years since Henrietta died. I guess that doctors of Hopkins thought African Americans are inferior to White American, that is, a racial discrimination.
In conclusion, Telinde and Gey might be good doctors, but they committed immoral research because Henrietta had not been given clear, explicit consent. Todays, not keeping informed cosent is to violate the laws.
“ Two Aspects of Immigration “
The United States is a country that has been built by immigrants. However, Americans have ambivalence, that is, positive attitude and negative attitude about immigration.
First of all, many supporters of immigration in the United States have very positive feelings toward immigration. They insist that many people working in high tech companies are immigrants. Simply speaking, internet business companies such as Google and Intel were begun by immigrants. In addition, new immigrants contribute to society and country as immigrant’s ancestors did. For example, immigrants increase the nation’s productivity by buying homes, starting new business, and pay taxes. They also add to the diversity in America and excitement of American culture.
On the other hand, the majority of Americans oppose the continued high immigration rate. Some Americans believe that immigrants take jobs away from U.S. citizen and keep wages low. Some people also criticize the fact that immigrants use too many expensive public resources such as medical services and schools. Furthermore, Americans do not like that immigrants have different culture and customs, and religions as Americans. Therefore, Americans who have negative feelings for immigration think that immigrants could not be true American citizens. For instance, immigrants do not make a effort to learn English and American culture, and those reasons might result in hostility for some groups of immigrants.
Today, many American people are afraid of terrorism after the Paris attack. According to a “ The NewYork Times” article from Nov,26. 2015, Senator Bernie Sanders “immigrants should be welcomed and assimilated, not criminalized and exploited” insisted. Mr. Sanders also sees immigrants as parents, breadwinners, taxpayers, bulwarks of the economy and of the communities they live in. In contrast, Ben Carson compared “Syrian refugees are rabid dogs”, and Donald Trump says “ I would send immigrants back”. According to a survey, Americans by nearly two to one oppose President Obama’s Plan to admit 10,000 Syrians over a year.
In spite of this American opinion, I agree with President Obama. I also believe that immigration should be continue because America is the nation of immigrants. Moreover, America should be responsible for protecting the weak like Syrian refugees because America is the most powerful nation on earth. In conclusion, the important fact of all is that immigrants are our nation’s assets.

“ Good School can Make Low-Income Teenagers Healthier “
A study insists that students who attend high-performing school may be made healthier than teenagers who go to schools that are’nt as good. The researchers studied the behaviors which are high-performing school students and low-performing school teans had an extraordinary difference in risky behaviors.
